A spectacular Cliff Walk through an extraordinary history
Our exhibition on this panoramic ledge reveals the origins of Swiss Hospitality. 150 years ago, local friends, Bucher and Durrer, while boating on Lake Lucerne looked up at the Bürgenberg and noticed a meadowed ledge. These men had vision without limits. Two years later on 8th June 1873, they opened the very first hotel, drawing crowds from around the world. They achieved extraordinary feats of engineering, Switzerland’s first funicular railway, the highest, fastest, outdoor elevator, a revolutionary hydroelectric power plant and this Cliff Walk. There have been so many innovations, up to the dramatic architecture you see today. Don’t miss this truly breathtaking exhibition.
